2nd guard at Mt. Sterling prison gets 20-year prison sentence

Todd Sheffler of Mendon sentenced Monday in 2018 beating death.

An Adams County man, and a former prison guard at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling, convicted on charges connected to the fatal beating of an inmate in 2018, will serve a long prison sentence.

Todd Sheffler of Mendon was in US District Court in Springfield Monday, where he was sentenced to 20 years in Federal prison. Sheffler will also have five years' supervised release once he's out of prison. Sheffler was convicted in late August on counts of Conspiracy to deprive civil rights, Deprivation of civil rights, witness tampering, falsifying a record and witness intimidation. A second defendant, Alex Banta of Quincy, was found Guilty on similar charges last April. Both men were convicted for taking part in the April, 2018 beating of 65-year-old Larry Earvin. He died of his injuries a month later. Banta was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison.

A third defendant, Willie Hedden of Mount Sterling, has pleaded Guilty to similar counts. He co-operated with the government and testified in both trials. Hedden will be sentenced Wednesday.
