277 new cases reported Wednesday - highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic

Three more Adams County residents have died of COVID-19, and a new one-day record for new cases has been set in Adams County.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said Wednesday that a 177th, 178th and 179th Adams County resident all died of the virus. IDPH reported that in Adams County, 277 people tested positive for the virus Tuesday. That beats the old record of 257, just set on Tuesday. Since Sunday, over 675 people have tested positive in Adams County. Another 1,000 people were tested Tuesday for the virus.

Hundreds of new cases have also been reported in West Central Illinois, including 75 new cases in Cass County, 74 new cases in McDonough County, 47 new cases in Pike County, 31 new cases in Brown County, 30 new cases in Hancock County and 26 new cases in Schuyler County.

As a result, Intensive Care Unit beds in West-Central Illinois are nearly all filled. The latest data from IDPH, compiled through late Tuesday night, shows that in District 3, which includes all of West-Central Illinois and Springfield, out of 165 Intensive Care Unit beds, there are only 6 available. That means 96 per cent of the region's ICU beds are in use.

District 3 is among four districts in the state that are down to single digits in the number of available ICU beds.
