Mark and Chris Lawrence claim charges against them are false

The founders of a Quincy organization that builds tiny homes for veterans, who were forced out in 2021, have sued that organization's leadership.

Mark and Chris Lawrence, founders of 2 x 4's for Hope, filed the suit last Wednesday in Adams County Circuit Court. The suit names 2 x 4's for Hope President Kevin Murphy and Board members Terra Murphy, Renea Peters, Kevin Peters, Zach Shaffer and Amber Shaffer. The Lawrence's say that when the Board sent a letter to the Illinois State Police last fall, asking that the Lawrence's be investigated for possible theft, that those charges were false. That investigation by the ISP is ongoing. The Lawrence's say they were defamed by the action and are asking for over 100 thousand dollars in actual damages, as well as punitive damages. The Lawrence's were fired last November by the Board, who also filed a restraining order against the couple. A hearing on that order is set for next week.

The Lawrence's complaint is available below.
