Governor Pritzker was at John Wood Community College to talk about the increase in funding for Illinois's colleges and universities. The increase in funding is part of the $50 billion state budget approved recently by the Illinois General Assembly, and awaiting Governor Pritzker's signature. Governor Pritzker said Monday that due to the funding increases, most Illinois college students won't pay nearly as much tuition and fees at in-state schools.

The Governor's Office says that the spending hike for higher education is the biggest in 20 years. The increases include an additional 100 million dollars in the next fiscal year for the Monetary Award Program or MAP. That will raise the total outlay in the program to over $700 million. MAP grants are used by Illinois students who show a financial need, to help pay for their college education. Monday afternoon, JWCC President Dr. Bryan Renfro said that over a third of John Wood students use MAP.
