Douglass Community Services will use money to build new facility.

A Hannibal non-profit has received a $1 million Federal grant to help it build a new facility.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Missouri State Director Kyle Wilkens Monday announced they've handed out that $1million grant to Douglass Community Services. The money comes from the Community Facilities Loan & Grant Program, and was awarded due to a request from Congressman Sam Graves. Douglass Community Services will use the money to build a new 8,000 square foot steel building for offices, a thrift store, community room, and a food pantry. Right now, they use the former Hannibal Medical Center. Douglass provides services in the Hannibal area such as a food pantry; thrift store; housing and utility assistance; Foster Grandparents; RSVP Program for seniors, Christmas Blessings Program; USDA Youth Meals; Head Start; Kids in Motion summer program and Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, for neglected and abused children.

It is estimated that the project will benefit nearly 124,000 people in the area. The Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant Program offers affordable funding to develop essential community facilities in rural areas.
