Motion filed by lawyer for John Dean

A Mt. Sterling man, convicted of murder in the June 2019 death of a Mt. Sterling woman, says he wants either to be acquitted or to have a new trial.

Records show that on Friday, an attorney for John Dean filed a motion in Brown County Circuit Court asking for the acquittal or new trial. Dean was convicted in mid-December on one count of 1st Degree Murder in the shooting death of Rebecca Niewohner in June of 2019. She was found dead at a home in the 400 block of East Chestnut in Mt. Sterling. Prosecutors said that Dean shot Niewohner once in the face with a .45 caliber hand gun. He was also found with a gunshot wound to the face, and was taken to a Springfield hospital. Dean's defense had argued that Niewohner committed suicide.

Dean is due to be sentenced February 17th.
