New area code overlay announced for Northeast Missouri

New area code overlay announced for Northeast Missouri

No word yet on when 235 area code numbers will be handed out

The Missouri Public Service Commission has announced the new area code overlay for the 573 area code in Northeast Missouri.

The PSC said Tuesday that the North American Numbering Plan Administrator, or NANPA, has decided to add a new area code of 235 to the current 573 area code in Missouri. The new area code is needed, because of the increased demand for new residential and business numbers in the 573 area code. NANPA estimates that the supply of numbers for the 573 area code will run out by early 2025. Telephone customers in the existing 573 area code who request new service or an additional telephone line may be assigned a telephone number with the new area code when it becomes available. The PSC says that telephone numbers will not change for any existing customers, the price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay, and what is a local call now will remain a local call.

Like Western Illinois residents in the 217 and 309 area codes, customers in the 573 area code must dial 10 digits for local calls. The PSC says that the specific timing of when telephone numbers with the new 235 area code will become available is still to be determined but says that customers should start to identify their telephone number as a 10-digit number, and include the area code when giving the number to others.
