70 students at risk of dropping out will be served

The routine renewal of a state grant means Adams County students at high risk of dropping out will get specialized help.

The Quincy Public Schools will continue to host the alternative school site for Adams County in the building at 1416 Maine Street. Wednesday night, the Quincy Public Schools Board approved an agreement with the Regional Superintendent of Schools to continue operating the Academy. The Academy serves students who have discipline or behavior difficulties that prevent them from being part of a mainstream classroom. 61 slots at the Academy are reserved for Quincy students. 9 slots are used by rural Adams County schools.

Two Quincy School Board members were surprised last night when Superintendent Dr. Todd Pettit presented them with a state honor for outstanding leadership. Carol Nichols and Jim Whitfield were recognized as Distinguished Local School Board Leaders by the Illinois School Board Association.

The Board also learned that bids will likely be sought in January for renovations to the former K & L Arena. The facility will be used as QPS's new transportation headquarters.
