Quincy man to go on trial next year in February murder case

1 year, 6 months ago by Scott Hardy

Devere Gholston's trial to start January 9.

A Quincy man, arrested on murder and other charges from a February incident, will go on trial early next year.

Devere Gholston was in Adams County Circuit Court Tuesday, where a January 9th trial date was set. Gholston's pleaded Not Guilty to three counts of 1st Degree Murder, along with counts of Residential Burglary and Robbery. The Adams County Sheriff's Office says they arrested Gholston on a warrant the morning of February 19th at a Quincy motel on 3rd Street. They have said that the arrest is in connection with a murder that happened several days earlier in a home in the Gross Gables subdivision, just north of Quincy. 16-year old Hayden Schmidt is also charged in the case, and will be tried in November as an adult. Prosecutors say that Gholston was waiting outside in a car while the boy tried to steal several guns from his grandfather. The boy's alleged to have hit the man, identified as Robert Schmidt, on the head with a gun.

Gholston is in the Adams County Jail on $10 million bond. Schmidt is in the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center, also on $10 million bond.
