Nearly 100 members of United Steelworkers union are on strike against Continental Cement

Union workers at a Hannibal cement-making company have gone on strike.

Nearly 100 members of the United Steelworkers Local 11-205 went out on strike at 4:00 AM Wednesday morning against Continental Cement. That's after union workers there worked without a contract since May 2022. In a statement, the union said the decision to strike was taken due to what the union says are unfair labor practices. They say that even though the previous contract with Continental Cement originally expired in May 2022, union employees continued working without a formal contract extension while bargaining continued. USW union district director Emil Ramirez said in a statement that the negotiations between the union and the company were hindered by what the union described as "management’s unfair demands for workers to give up their voice over scheduling issues, overtime and cross training, as well as its discriminatory terminations of union employees and refusal to provide information needed for bargaining.” The Union gave a show of support to Continental Cement workers back in December, as negotiations continued.

Continental Cement has just over 200 employees, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Summit Materials, Incorporated, based in Denver.
