Will give Sheriff's Dept. more leeway in enforcement

The Adams County Sheriff's Office will now have more leeway in how they deal with animal nuisance and other similar calls, after action Tuesday night by the Adams County Board. Scott Hardy has more.

The Board adopted revisions in the County's animal control ordinance that gives deputies more latitude. Legislative Committee Chairman Ryan Niekamp says that in many instances, the ordinance exchanged the word "shall" with the word "may". He says it makes a difference in enforcement.

The change came about after neighbors complained about a dog in their neighborhood just outside Quincy. The Legislative Committee will now examine another issue where neighbors brought their concerns to the Board. That involves the RKBA gun range on Ellington Road, which neighbors say is too loud. Niekamp's not sure what, if anything, the County can do about it.

About 20 neighbors have signed a petition, saying they want the range to be closed.
