10-week program to get residents to lose weight, be healthy

A group of Quincy and Adams County organizations want residents to lose weight - and a dubious distinction.

The Salvation Army's Kroc Center has partnered with numerous groups including the Quincy Family YMCA, Blessing Health System and Quincy Medical Group to introduce Adams County into ACTION. That stands for Adams County Taking Initiative on Obesity Now. The move comes after an article appeared on 24/7Wall Street.com that ranked Adams County as the most obese county in Illinois. A statement from the Salvation Army says 37% of Adams County residents are considered obese. The state average is 29%. ACTION Program participants will get free access to the Kroc Center or the Quincy Family YMCA for a 10-week period starting in September. They also have the opportunity to attend free health seminars, and gain free access to educational information on fitness, wellness, and nutrition.

There'll be an ACTION kick-off and health and wellness fair on Saturday, August 25th from 10AM to 1PM at The Kroc Center. The ACTION finale will be held Friday, November 16th at the Kroc Center at 6PM.
