Mississippi Valley Council plans several special program days at Saukenauk, Eastman

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another annual summer event.

The Mississippi Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America has decided to cancel this year's summer camps at Saukenauk Scout Reservation in Adams County and Camp Eastman in Hancock County. A statement from the Council Wednesday says the cancellation was made because "We prioritize the safety of our Scouts and campers and want to make sure we are able to provide a full program of adventure." The Council will contact Scouts by June 1st about refund options. Cub Scout and Webelos Summer camps are still planned for August and September. Scouts will still be able to earn merit badges and advance in rank, through virtual courses and special program days at both camps. There will be a shooting weekend at Saukenauk on July 18th and 19th. There will also be a hiking and climbing event July 25th and 26th, where Scouts will hike from Camp Eastman to Saukenauk. The Council is also planning what they call a Waterfront Adventure at Eastman, involving boating and canoeing activities.

There's no date set for that event, but scouts will camp overnight at all three events.
