2 years, 7 months ago by Scott Hardy

John Dean was due to go on trial Monday; trial will now start December 6.

A Mt. Sterling man, accused of murder in the June 2019 death of a Mt. Sterling woman, has had his trial delayed to December.

John Dean was in Brown County Circuit Court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing. Dean was set to go on trial Monday, but a defense motion asking for a delay was granted. Dean will now go on trial December 6th. His lawyer has filed motions to limit DNA evidence. That will be heard at a pre-trial hearing November 4th. Dean faces one count of 1st Degree Murder. He's accused of fatally shooting Rebecca Niewohner in June of 2019. She was found dead at a home in the 400 block of East Chestnut in Mt. Sterling. A charging document says that Dean shot Niewohner once in the face with a 45 caliber hand gun. Dean was also found with a gunshot wound to the face, and was taken to a Springfield hospital.

Brown's in the Schuyler County Jail on $1 million bond.
