Hearing set for Monday

A Pittsfield man, charged in connection with the death earlier this month of a Pittsfield woman, will have a hearing Monday over his mental fitness.

David Sampley was in Pike County, Illinois Circuit Court Friday for a preliminary hearing on a Class X count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault, and counts of Aggravated Domestic Battery by strangulation and Domestic Battery. That hearing was delayed, and instead Sampley will have be back in court Monday for a mental fitness hearing, after Sampley’s attorney requested he be examined. A probable cause statement says that Sharon Welch was strangled with a sock down her throat on the night of June 4th. Sampley was arrested after authorities found Welch's body in a home in the 600 block of Clarksville Road.

Sampley's in the Pike County Jail on $2 million bond, and could face more charges after the results of an autopsy on Welch are revealed.
