FACEBOOK OR FAKEBOOK?

FACEBOOK OR FAKEBOOK?

7 years, 1 month ago Mike Moyers

Facing the facts? Are you up to it?

Snapchat going public this week was, to me, another indication of how fast things change.  Ten minutes ago Myspace was hot.  Or it seemed like ten minutes ago.

The founders of Snap Inc., Bobby Murphy and Evan Speigel, each made $272 million dollars with the introduction of their stock which opened at $17.00 and, at the time of writing this blog, was at $25.69.  Darn, and me without an extra 100k laying around to invest.

But what’s the secret, Lucy?  Where will Snapchat be this time next year?  Will it turn into the dumpster fire that is now FACEBOOK?  Hope not, but it could.

As Mark Levin would say, “there, I said it!!!”

FACEBOOK is an interesting creature.  It’s a creature that I stayed away from until a few years ago.   I was compelled to join after a business associate called and alerted me to the fact that one of the stations I manage had come under attack by a group of listeners.  Not having the time to mess with FACEBOOK back then I reluctantly joined up.  And sure enough, there was the page I was alerted to.   The result of that discovery is another story in itself.

Since then I’ve had to make time to troll social media.  Each of the 5 stations I manage has its own FACEBOOK page and part of my daily duties are to spend a few moments with each.   Social media has become the beast that is always hungry.

But as much as I once enjoyed FACEBOOK I now find it to be a back alley filled with partisan posts (both sides), soft porn links, a number of self serving “look at me types” and just general nonsense.  Once upon a time one might have found something of use on FACEBOOK.  But not so much anymore.

And what about using FACEBOOK to promote business?  Some have great success and some don’t.  The rules seem to change almost daily.  And the only way you find out about the change is when a post you made shows up on your wall 3 days after the event you were promoting took place.  Great.

And who do you call?  Is there a FACEBOOK office nearby?  What’s my reps name?

There isn’t one?  Stop complaining?  Of course.  What’s wrong with me?

My concern with all social media is that our society is taking more time to post, text and photo bomb than we are actually conducting face to face conversations.  Speaking the spoken word is fast becoming a lost art.  Actually making eye contact is a challenge some aren’t up to.

So, how about we just deal with the FACE and not with the FACEBOOK.  Find a FACE, look at it, speak to it and hope that something of substance comes back at you.

Now, go ahead and like this if you get a chance.
