Gavin murder re-trial still on for this month

4 years, 3 months ago by Scott Hardy

Steven Gavin will be re-tried January 13 in 2015 killing of Carlous Wires, Sr.

A Quincy man, charged in the 2015 shooting death of Carlous Wires, Sr., will go on trial later this month after a hearing Friday.

Steven Gavin was in Adams County Circuit Court for a pre-trial hearing, ahead of a January 13th re-trial. That trial is expected to take 6 to 7 days. If Gavin testifies, local media won't be able to photograph him, or shoot video of him while he's on the stand. That request by the defense was granted Friday by Judge Robert Adrian. Gavin's facing four counts of 1st Degree Murder and one count of Armed Robbery. Gavin's first trial ended in a hung jury in February after 13 hours of deliberation.

He's accused of shooting Wires in his North 4th Street home in November 2015, in a disagreement over the price of a drug sale. Gavin's also been charged with counts of possessing a weapon in a penal institution and intimidation. He's alleged to have had a home-made knife in his cell April 27th, which was found during an inspection. He’s also accused of telling Adams County jailers in early May that he'd kill any inmate who was put in his cell. Gavin's pleaded Not Guilty to those charges, which were continued until after the trial.

Gavin's in the Adams County Jail on a total of $5.5 million bond.
