City also buying 11 new police cruisers

Hannibal is ready to take the next step in its Riverfront project. Jim Dewey has the story.

( Audio  1:28 )

Hannibal Parks and Recreation Director Andy Dorian talked about Mussels at last night's city council meeting. Not the kind you get from eating spinach but the kind you find in the Mississippi River. Dorian said that any time there is any construction work done on the river, a mussel study must be conducted. Council approved a 3-part contract with the project's engineers at Klingner and Associates which includes $70,000 for the Mussel study. Klingner will subcontract out that part of the project to Eco-analysts

If no endangered species is found the project will continue.

After that study - Eco-analysts divers will return and move the mussels. In other action last night, the Council approved the purchase of 11 new police cars for a total of over $457,000. Council also approved the addition of a third School Resource Officer in the Public School District. The school district will pay half of that officer's salary.
