High winds, rain knock out power in MO, IL

Thousands affected by outages; power restored throughout day

Heavy rains and high winds hit the Tri-States overnight, at one point knocking out power for thousands.

The National Weather Service says that gusts reached 58 miles per hour overnight at Mt. Sterling, 55 miles per hour at Quincy Regional Airport, and 52 miles per hour at Pittsfield. Nickel-sized hail and heavy rain was also reported late Tuesday night in parts of Adams County. According to Ameren's outage map, at one point over 13,000 Ameren Illinois customers and nearly 16,000 Ameren Missouri customers were without power. In Illinois, those outages ran primarily in communities along Highway 24 including Quincy, Camp Point and Mt. Sterling. In Missouri, outages were reported in both Bowling Green and Louisiana.

Adams Electric Co-op reported at one point, about 60 customers without power in Adams and Schuyler counties.
