Board learns tax levy won't increase

John Wood Community College's Board of Trustees learned Wednesday night that the College is retaining more students than similar community colleges across the country.

The Board heard a report about the College’s student retention rates. They show that during the first 10 days of the current semester, JWCC retained 96 per cent of all credit hours in which students enrolled. That's the highest percentage the College has had in the last four years. JWCC says that according to 2018 data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the College kept 66 per cent of first-time, full-time students and 53 percent of first-time, part-time students from fall 2016 to fall 2017. That's higher than 28 other similar sized community colleges from across the country. They averaged 61 per cent full-time and 36 per cent part-time retention rates during the same period.

The Board also learned that most of JWCC's 2019's tax rate will stay the same as in 2018, at just over 42 cents per $100 assessed valuation. JWCC says that due to increases in some property values, they'll collect over $377,000 more, or just over $7.5 million. The college will collect those funds during the next fiscal year.

The levy will be voted on by the Board next month.
