David Sampley's mental fitness will be re-evaluated in November

A Pittsfield man, charged with murder in the death of a Pittsfield woman, is still not mentally fit to stand trial after a review of his fitness.

A lawyer for David Sampley was in Pike County Illinois Circuit Court Tuesday for a case review, which revealed the results of the latest progress report from the state hospital where Sampley's being kept by the Illinois Department of Human Services. Another review of Sampley's fitness is set for November 20th. He was charged with two counts of 1st Degree Murder in late July, after he was found unfit to stand trial in late June. Prosecutors think Sampley will be restored to fitness by next summer. When he is, he’ll return to Pike County to face the Murder charges, along with a Class X count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault, and counts of Aggravated Domestic Battery by strangulation and Domestic Battery. A probable cause statement says that Sharon Welch was strangled with a sock down her throat, and had her chest stomped on June 4th.

Sampley was arrested after authorities found Welch's body in a home in the 600 block of Clarksville Road.
