Includes rescue attempt by a witness

Quincy police have released more details about a weekend incident where a Quincy man drove his vehicle into the Mississippi River Saturday afternoon and died of his injuries.

The QPD released its' accident report Monday on the death of 94-year old Robert Rooney, which happened around 3:45 PM at Kesler Park. The report says that Rooney was pulling into a parking spot just north of the restrooms at the park, when he failed to stop after pulling into the parking space facing the river. That caused his car to hit a tree. The vehicle continued to travel west and went over a small cliff and into the river. Once in the water, police say Rooney's vehicle floated south down the bay before coming to a stop on something under water. They add that a witness, Ashley Vollbracht, jumped into the river and tried unsuccessfully to get Rooney out of the car.

Police say that once Rooney was freed from the vehicle by first responders, he was taken to Blessing Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
