Steven Gavin felt public defender had conflict

A Quincy man, accused of murder in the 2015 shooting death of Carlous Wires, Senior, will have a new attorney representing him.

Steven Gavin was in Adams County Circuit Court Monday for a hearing. Public Defender Chris Pratt filed a motion last week, saying that Gavin believes he had a conflict. Gavin felt the conflict was that because Pratt represented Albert Cartmill in a previous case, and that he may testify against Gavin, that there's a conflict. Gavin also believed that Albert Cartmill received a favorable plea deal in a 2017 drug case in part so Cartmill's nephew Terron Cartmill could testify against Gavin. Prosecutors denied any type of deal in place, but confirmed that Terron Cartmill's testimony is vital to the case. Judge Robert Adrian did grant Gavin's request for a new lawyer. He also told Gavin that once a new lawyer is appointed, it will likely delay any trial for months. Gavin's pleaded Not Guilty to four counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Armed Robbery. Prosecutors say Gavin shot and killed Wires, and then robbed him in his home in the 700 block of North 4th Street in November, 2015, due to a disagreement over a drug sale.

Gavin's in the Adams County Jail on $5 million bond, and will be back in court October 24th.
