Murphy: "We will be open in the fall for as long as possible"

Even if the state of Illinois fails to pass a budget, students in Quincy Public Schools will likely be in class this fall.

Business manager Joel Murphy says "We will be open in the fall for as long as possible."

Chronic truancy remains a problem in Quincy. Principals from pre-K through Baldwin asked the school board last night for more resources to meet the emotional and social needs of children. At Washington Elementary, the truancy rate is 14%. Principal Sara Cramer says "kids must be in school to learn. Truants fall behind." School Board member Mike Troup told the principals "More must be done to save the kids."

In other action, the Quincy School Board approved a ten cent hike in school lunch prices. Elementary students will pay $2.30. Junior and Senior High students will pay $2.55 for school lunch. Student parking fees are going up. A parking space at the high school will cost $60.00. Shuttle parking at Flinn Stadium will rise to $50.00. A three year contract for trash removal was awarded to Republic Services. The $126,000.00 cost is lower than the current contract.

School administrators will explore opening a child care center for school district employees. The center would offer before school and after school care for children of staff. The fees paid would cover the operation cost of the child care service.
