Former QHS standout to pitch in the NCAA II World Series.

Some boys dream of playing in the World Series.  Some Dads dream of watching their sons play in the World Series.

For Al and Andrew Eilers those dreams have come true.

Andrew Eilers is in the starting rotation of the Lindenwood Lions.  Lindenwood recently captured the NCAA Division II Central Regional title and have advanced to the Division II World Series.

The former QHS right-hander has enjoyed a solid season going 7-2 with an ERA of 4.71.  He’s fanned 83 batters in 91.2 innings and is the number 2 pitcher in the rotation.  Lindenwood has gone 12-4 in Eiler's 16 starts this season.

The journey has taken Eilers to summer ball in Myrtle Beach, Florida 2 years ago and an extensive, specialized workout program this past summer.

“He trained at Train Smart,” Eilers explained.  “Gary put together a program that allowed Andrew to strengthen his core muscles without putting strain on his lower back, which he’s always had trouble with. That program improved both his core and his back and really made a difference this season.”

Eilers’ fastball has been clocked in the high 80’s.  But it’s control and changing speeds that has had the opposition batters on their heels this year.

“He moves the ball around, changes speeds and tries to live on the corners.  It’s nice to see that all of Andrew’s hard work has paid off,” said a beaming Al Eilers. “The work has resulted in an experience (going to the World Series) that he’ll never forget.”

Sitting on the edge of your seat for four games in five days is tough on the players, but even more of a challenge for Mom and Dad.

“Andrew’s a starting pitcher so a lot of it’s just fun as you’re obviously very nervous when your son is pitching,” Eilers laughed.  “His game during the regional was against Emporia State which was the number one seed.  The wind was blowing out-so it was a little nerve racking; and quite a crazy game.  But they (Lindenwood) wound up winning it which was huge as it kept them in the winner’s bracket. “

This week Al Eilers is attempting to work ahead so the family can make it to Texas for the Series. Andrew is scheduled to pitch on Monday, May 29th.  Friends of the family can see the games on line here.

By the way, Quincy University is among the final eight teams remaining in the NCAA II World Series and should good things happen, QU could meet Lindenwood in the finals.

As Mel Allen used to say, “How about that!”
