The NFL: Oh, NOW we want you to stand......

Roger Goodell steps in it again

Forrest Gump once said, “stupid is as stupid does.”

That pretty much sums up the NFL to date.  With both attendance and TV viewership in the crapper the NFL Commissioner chose October 10th to send a letter to the NFL owners making it clear that he (Goodell) wants players to stand during the National Anthem.

Of course, in true Roger Goodell fashion, he was unclear on how that was to happen, leaving it up to the owners.

"Like many of our fans," Goodell wrote, "we believe that everyone should stand for the national anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us.

"We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues. The controversy over the Anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players."

This just in Roger; America has moved past the controversy.  The vast majority of Americans have found other things to do on Sundays.   You and the 32 owners blew this one.  I thought “inflate-gate” was the dumbest stunt you had ever pulled, but siding with the social justice crowd and playing the kneeler’s card tops that and then some.

The big surprise with all this is that you have any fans OR sponsors AT ALL.   The NFL is now the over-promise-under perform-take-no-responsibility-for-our-actions league.

Even though sponsors of the NFL have down played the controversy you just know it's a topic of conversation in the board room.   Media buyers for General Motors, Budweiser, Doritos, and others  have to be wondering whether or not they want their brand linked to this horribly managed dumpster fire.  I can’t wait to see how much in real dollars the lack of common sense and poor management by the owners and the Commissioner’s office will cost the league.

It’s really pretty simple; the players work for the owners, the owners dictate terms and policies to the coaches and players.  And if those terms and policies aren’t adhered to it’s pink slip time.  That’s called business, Roger.

But you, sir, have closed the barn door long after the horse got out.  It’s too late Roger.  It’s just too late.

UNLESS you and the owners do this: cut any player, and that means ANY player, who disrespects the flag and chooses not to stand for the National Anthem.  And make the cut immediate; like escort the kneelers off of the field in front of the TV viewer and the few that came to the game.

Do that and you might get a few former NFL fans back in the stadiums and back in front of the TVs on Sundays.

As is it now dropping to one knee has cost you a huge percentage of your fan base.  All that's left is for you and the gang of 32 to drop to BOTH knees and ask us to come back.

And for many I've spoken to even that won't get it done.
