Quincy Man Wins Emmy Award

So, let me get this straight; you’re on the job for one year; you're nominated for four Emmy Awards during that time period and you win your first Emmy on December 3rd.  Is that right?

“That’s pretty much it,” said former Quincian Kevin Doellman. “Tomorrow (December 6th) is my one year anniversary at WGN TV.”

Are you interested in getting the rest of this?

Doellman, the son of Kenny and Mary Doellman of Quincy, is a rising star at WGN in Chicago. He’s part of a 3 man remote news team consisting of 2 photo journalists and 1 reporter.  They’re in the Chicago streets, which, in this day and age isn’t always the safest place to be.

However, a short time ago Doellman and his news crew were in the right place at the right time covering what looked to be a pretty simple story when something unforeseen occurred.

“We were interviewing Troy Laraviere, a principal in one of the Chicago schools who had been nominated as most outstanding administrator the previous year,” Doellman explained.  As we were doing the story he got fired for speaking out against the Chicago teacher’s pension crisis. Once that went down Laraviere gave WGN TV exclusive access to the story. I think that helped us quite a bit in winning the Emmy.”

Kevin’s official title is “photo journalist.” But he laughingly calls himself “Kevin the camera guy.”

“I got to do more on this piece,” Doellman continued. “I filmed the interviews along with Mike Lowe (the reporter) and Mike requested I edit the piece.  So, on this one I was one of the contributing photographers and video editors.” The Emmy was officially for Outstanding Achievement for News Specialty Report/Series – Education/SchoolsThe Principal’s Principles (Parts 1 and 2): Mike Lowe, Kevin Doellman, Nelson Howard, Steve Scheuer, Vicky Thomas comprised the team.

News was in Kevin Doellman’s life early in the game.

“My dad would always put on the 10 o’clock news.   No matter what we doing we would have to watch the 10 o’clock news when I was growing up.  We’re watching a half of hour of news then Jay Leno,” Doellman laughed.

Role models are scarce in this day and age, but Kevin and his brothers Matt and Brian have one of the best.

“Everyday I try to be like my Dad,” Kevin continued. “Eventually if I ever get up to his level that would be a win in my book.”

Ken and Mary have much to be proud of.   Matt, the eldest of the three, is a Major in the U.S. Army and Company Commander of the medical unit at Fort.Leonard Wood, Missouri.  Brian, the youngest, is a successful commodities trader in Overland Park, Kansas.

An Emmy at the age of 30?  Looks like Kevin Doellman’s future is so bright he has to wear shades.

Hold that Emmy high, Kevin.  Hold it high!!
