Third case of Legionnaire's Disease reported at Vets Home

Third case of Legionnaire's Disease reported at Vets Home

7 years, 8 months ago by Scott Hardy

All three cases are recovering, according to Dept of Veterans Affairs

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Public Health say that a third resident at the Illinois Veterans Home has contracted Legionnaire's Disease.

The Departments confirmed the third case on Thursday, as they announced that they were no longer consulting with the Centers for Disease Control over the latest outbreak of the disease. In a joint statement, the Departments said since the first report of new Legionnaires’ disease infections at the Vets Home was announced last month, 24 veterans were tested overall, with three positive results. They add that all three positive cases are recovering. The announcement last month of two new cases prompted a visit to the Vets Home by Governor Rauner.

The Departments say in the statement they have been implementing all of the CDC's past recommendations to reduce the risk of Legionnaires’ disease at the home. The State spent nearly five million dollars on a new water treatment system at the home following last year's Legionnaire's outbreak, which killed 12 residents, and infected 54 residents and staff.
