Hannibal businessman was leader in growing area's transportation options

A Hannibal businessman, community leader and transportation advocate has died.

Tom Boland passed away Friday night at the age of 88, according to a listing on the James O'Donnell Funeral Home's website. Boland bought the Hannibal auto dealership that now bears his name in 1968. Boland started his efforts to improve the area's highways in the 1980's, eventually leading to a four-lane US 36 in Northeast Missouri, as well as having Interstate 72, Highways 61 and 27 all intersect in Hannibal. Boland was on the Missouri Economic Development Board, then on the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission from 1992 to 1998. That included a four-year term as commission Chairman. In 2016, a section of US 61 that runs through Hannibal was named after Boland. He also helped to found the Tri-State Development Summit in 1996.

The funeral home says that services for Tom Boland are pending.
