Winter storm on its' way Friday

Winter storm on its' way Friday

4 years, 3 months ago by Scott Hardy

1-3 inches of snow, sleet possible

A winter storm is set to make traveling difficult Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for all of the WTAD listening area through Midnight Friday. The Weather Service says that total snow accumulations of up to three inches and ice accumulations of around one to two tenths of an inch are possible. Winds could also gust up to 30 miles per hour. The snow, sleet and ice expected Friday in northeast Missouri could create slippery driving conditions, and drivers are encouraged to plan accordingly. Missouri Department of Transportation District Engineer Paula Gough says crews will be out in full force to once again battle a variety of precipitation.

Gough says that it looks like the storm will start in the southern part of the Northeast district with light snow and will move north. She added that more snow and sleet are expected later in the day as the storm moves north, with a chance of up to one-tenth of ice in certain parts. Gough says that north of US 36 is where MoDOT is expecting the most snow, yet most of the District's 17 counties will have snow and the potential for ice. Gough praised drivers during last weekend’s storm, saying that most drivers heeded their warning against traveling, and they noticed a significant decrease in traffic.

Ameren Missouri has some suggestions for its' customers that may be affected by Friday's storm. They include avoid going outside and be aware of downed lines and poles if you must be outdoors. Keep trees trimmed to prevent limbs and branches from falling on power lines. Use a broom to keep natural gas meters and piping clear during the winter. Never use a shovel, ice chipper, pole or similar tool or even hit your natural gas meter or piping as this may damage equipment. Make sure your home is properly insulated to keep temperatures warm inside. Be sure to check on elderly and disabled friends and neighbors.

Ameren also says it's a good idea to prepare an emergency kit with supplies to use in the event of a storm. That kit should include flashlights, radios, batteries, non-perishable foods, water, medicines, blankets and warm clothes.
