John Dean found Guilty by a jury in Brown County Circuit Court

A Brown County jury has convicted a Mt. Sterling man of murder in the June 2019 death of a Mt. Sterling woman.

That jury returned a Guilty verdict Thursday morning in the trial of John Dean in Brown County Circuit Court. Jurors got the case late Wednesday morning, and deliberated through the afternoon before being sent home for the day. They returned Thursday morning. Dean was convicted on one count of 1st Degree Murder in the shooting death of Rebecca Niewohner in June of 2019. She was found dead at a home in the 400 block of East Chestnut in Mt. Sterling. Prosecutors said that Dean shot Niewohner once in the face with a .45 caliber hand gun. He was also found with a gunshot wound to the face, and was taken to a Springfield hospital. Dean's defense had argued that Niewohner committed suicide.

Dean is due to be sentenced February 17th.
