Gavin sentenced to 85 years in prison

Gavin sentenced to 85 years in prison

6 years, 5 months ago by Scott Hardy

25 years more than prosecutors wanted; convicted in 2015 shooting death of Carlous Wires, Sr.

A Quincy man, convicted of killing another man over the price of a drug sale, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

57-year old Steven Gavin was sentenced Tuesday afternoon to 85 years in prison, during a hearing in Adams County Circuit Court. Prosecutors had asked for a 60-year sentence. Prior to the sentencing, Gavin's lawyer Curtis Lovelace spent over two hours arguing a motion for Gavin to have a new trial. That was denied by Judge Robert Adrian. Gavin was convicted by a jury in February in the 2015 shooting death of Carlous Wires, Sr. after they deliberated for 14 hours over two days. Gavin was found Guilty on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery in Wires, Sr's death. Gavin's first trial in February 2019 was declared a mistrial. That's after a jury deliberated for 13 hours and couldn't reach a verdict. He also faces counts from two incidents after the first trial, including one incident where jailers said they found a home-made weapon in his cell.

Gavin also allegedly threatened to kill any inmate who was put in his cell.
