Request approved Tuesday by Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee
Hannibal Regional Healthcare System says that a state review board has approved their request to buy a linear accelerator for their proposed cancer center in Kirksville.
Hannibal Regional said Tuesday night that the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee approved their request for the accelerator, after a hearing. A press release says that after hearing Hannibal Regional's presentation, which noted that the Kirksville area had been without radiation oncology care for over two years, the vote was unanimous. Hannibal Regional plans to spend $7 million for the linear accelerator, and for construction of the building that will house it off Highway 63. They were helped by the Missouri Legislature, which approved $15 million in the last budget for the project. The Northeast Missouri Regional Medical Center in Kirksville had opposed the plan, saying the state money was allocated illegally, and that because they have since acquired a used linear accelerator that will be in service starting next year, that Hannibal Regional's project wasn't needed in the area.
Hannibal Regional's linear accelerator should be up and running by 2026.
